Stealing is part of me –suspect
Two armed robbery suspects have been arrested by the Police in Lagos for allegedly robbing with Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) identity. The suspects, Samson Babatunde 30 from Abeokuta and a resident of No.18 Moshalashi street Mushin, Akpan Sunday, 24, from Akwa Ibom State, police said were arrested as they were sharing their loots at a street in Iyana Ipaja. Police, acting on a tip-off, moved to the location where they were found off-loading their stolen goods and sharing among themselves. Babatunde in an interview with LAGOS WEEKEND, said “it is those boys that lured me into this business. They said it was OPC operation, what they do is to pretend as if they are OPC men. The identity cards are what they usually show to some residents of the area where they want to operate. They will frame up their victims that they learnt that the person has guns and then pack anything that the see and leave. “And after the operation we will now share whatever we get. One time we went to Olode area and we met one man as he was trying to reverse his car out of his compound, one of us called Wasiu, who is the owner of the gun asked the man to surrender, but he refused. Wasiu fired and killed the man in his car.

I won’t tell you lies, I joined them to operate on three occasions, I don’t know how much they made, they only gave me my share, sometimes they give me N15,000.00, at times more than that. We are many, we are up to 30, they all ran way,” Babatunde said. Narrating his own involvement, Apkan Sunday said he is highly involved in the crime and attributed it to unemployment. A chat with the accused by Lagos Weekend went thus: When, did you start stealing, have you ever stolen from your father? I started stealing when I was small, then I used to steal my father’s money and then steal from other people too, if anybody keeps anything that I liked I would take it. That means stealing is in your blood? Ma, I have begged, I have prayed and fasted, for God to Forgive me but no way. I prayed to God to help me stop all what am doing, I asked God if it is because of my father’s money that I use to steal, that is the reason i’m still stealing today, let him forgive me. If the Police release you now will you still go back to the crime? All I want is Government to provide me with a job and I won’t steal again. The Lagos police public relation Officer SP Frank Mba, said efforts are on in tracking down other fleeing suspects while investigation continues.
