Rivers gets N24bn from federation account in 12 months
GODDY ONYEMAECHI, PORT HARCOURT

The Rivers State government has received about N240billion from the federation account since Chibuike Amaechi assumed office as the governor nearly 12 months ago. Out of the amount over N105 billion had been spent on road construction and rehabilitation, while over N100 billion is saved in the bank. The governor who disclosed last week in Abuja during an interactive meeting with Rivers indigenes resident in Abuja , said the state currently receives the highest allocation from the federation account, and has met its contractual obligation with contractors handling various projects embarked upon by the state government to enhance the standard of living of Rivers people.

He, however, regretted that most of the contractors have left project sites because of threat to their lives by criminal elements in the state, reiterating that militants were kidnapping for their self economic gains. He explained that the state government has taken some major decisions especially that of relinquishing its equity holding in Rison Palm, the state palm plantation estate and Pabod Breweries, makers of Grand Malt and Grand Lager Beer but regretted that private investors are being chased away by the criminal activities of the youths. Amaechi stated that apart from the efforts to restore the Garden City status of Port Harcourt, his administration has recorded more achievement in rural development, particularly in road construction, stressing that the government has completed 28 internal roads in Elele, and Bori while that of Ahoada is on going, with over 100 other roads under construction in various communities.
