Africa, UN Foundation, Afrinvest, Access Bank partner on
grassroots healthcare
Friends of the Global Fund Africa (Friends Africa), a
Pan-African organisation which works to mobilize
strategic political and financial support for the fight
against AIDS, TB and Malaria is being funded by
Afrinvest West Africa, Access Bank Plc and the United
Nations Foundation to build the capacity of 60 African
healthfocused grassroots non-governmental organizations
through a seminar, linkages and mentoring. His
Excellency, President John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana
will declare the African Grassroots Capacity Building
Seminar open on September 15th 2008 at the La Palm Royal
Beach Hotel, Accra- Ghana.
The first-of-itskind initiative, which is a product of a
strategic partnership between Friends of the Global Fund
Africa (Friends Africa) and the African Council of AIDS
Service Organisations (AfriCASO), will increase the
planning, implementation, evaluation and fundraising
capacity of 60 health-focused African grassroots
non-governmental organizations. This pioneering seminar
is being spearheaded by Friends Africa and keenly
supported by the the UN Special Envoy on AIDS to Africa
and Vice Chair of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis
and Malaria, Elizabeth Mataka along with a team of
Global Fund staff who will be teaching the group how the
global fund works. Other donors and partners
participating include UNAIDS, World Health Organization
(WHO), World Bank, German Agency for Technical
Cooperation (GTZ), Rollback Malaria Partnership, Global
AIDS Alliance and the Packard and MTN Foundations
amongst others. The outcome of this special initiative
is for participating organisations to scale up their
activities through increased funding that will only come
with competitive proposals and satisfactory
implementation of existing projects.
