In line with the global call for increased food production, Akwa Ibom State Government has disbursed N13 billion to the agricultural sector of the state to boost its Accelerated Livestock Production scheme. Governor Godswill Akpabio made this known during the formal commissioning of 95 palm oil/kernel mini mills equipment worth millions of naira at Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, Uyo for co-operative societies in 19 core palm produce local government areas of the State. He said with the availability of the facilities, the co-operative societies would redefine the history of the State especially in poverty alleviation in urban and rural areas of the state.

The governor expressed the hope that in the future palm oil production would be stepped up beyond the three benefiting local government areas to cater for the lots of the masses during a fall in crude oil price at the international market. Chief Akpabio stressed the need for co-operative societies to be “partners in progress” and “co-builders of Akwa Ibom State Government” to promote the general welfare of the citizenry. Special Adviser on Bureau of Co-operative Development, Mr. Saviour Udoh, while commending the state government for putting everything in place to complete palm oil re-processing depots in the three local government areas: Essien Udim, Ukanafun and Ibesikpo-Asutan, appealed to the state government to make provision for the project in the 2009 Budget. Udoh observed that the successful completion of the project would in no mean facilitate the changing fortunes of a remarkable population of Akwa Ibom indigenes, reassuring the state government of their support towards realizing the poverty alleviation goal in the state.
