Lagos explains establishment of LASTMA
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Opeyemi Bamidele, says the establishment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was to address the traffic menace the city was sliding into at the time. Bamidele, who stated this while addressing newsmen, at Alausa, Ikeja, said the traffic situation on Lagos roads would have been unmanageable but for the agency. Declaring that the introduction of the traffic managers was necessary as it has helped in restoring sanity to the roads, the commissioner, however admitted that government has been receiving complaints against some of the officials. He assured that apart from in-built mechanism to check excesses of such officials, the administration has decided on constant restructuring of the authority to meet the increasing traffic challenges in the most populous Nigerian city. According to him, “in a big city like Lagos, with its commercial buoyancy, it is not unlikely to witness heavy vehicular activities but such immense traffic flow should not be allowed to stifle commercial activities in the city”.
